SSIR Students Publish Research with Jindal

In December 2017, 3 SSIR students worked closely with a team from the Jindal School of International Affairs to publish a research on urban informality and local markets in Phnom Penh.

Leng Sean Yong, Mong Kimmey and Sen Chantarasingh conducted qualitative interviews at 3 main markets across the city: Orrusey, Tuol Tom Poung (Russian Market) and Psar Doeum Kor. In total, students interviewed 42 sellers whose products included food produce, souvenirs or clothing.

Over their multiple visits to the markets, students interviewed sellers about the nature of their business, their personal motivations and profit and sales, among other subjects. The team’s findings were further contextualized by researchers at Jindal, who also conducted a similar study of markets in Delhi.

The final report should be published shortly, and will be shared via the SSIR channels as soon as it is available.
